DotNetNuke

DotNetNuke is a content management system (CMS) for websites, easy to use and highly extensible, with lots of add on modules.

One of my customers made me use Joomla. After suffering with that for three years, I was not motivated to look into another CMS, especially since I had written my own Asp.net framework, which of course I loved (and want to port to DotNetNuke).

After peering at DotNetNuke for a year, I finally gave it a try and immediately saw how powerful and easy to use it was. Have been moving my customers' and my websites to it since.

You need to keep track of all the information for your DotNetNuke websites. Here is a suggestion for documenting what you have.

  1. Create a folder structure like this.

Website Dnn Host : all the DNN websites
_dnn : your dnn general info
_dnn vendor : vendors dnn general info
      dnnhost1.com : dnn host website
        image : work image files
info : information about that website
          dnnhost1.com.txt : information file
        website : the actual website
website dnn : original dnn files changed
      dnnhost2.com ...
  2. When changing files or folders, copy the original adding an "@" followed by the date to the end of the name. Use the "@" to mean the file is deleteable, but you are keeping the file around just in case. Instead of an "@" use an "_" to mean the file is not deleteable. A filename or folder name like file@20091122 is deleteable and "file_20091122" is not deleteable.
  3. When you modify the web.config files, always use the @ naming convention and keep the prior versions around.
  4. You can use this file structure to keep your DotNetNuke installation website information.
